M. Butterfly

(1993)Directed by David Cronenberg101 min · RRomance, Drama
“Passion. Power. Revenge. In All Their Majesty.”

The question hanging over the film is who Song Liling (John Lone) really is, the opera singer a French diplomat meets in 1960s China and cannot stop thinking about. René Gallimard (Jeremy Irons) is married, yet he keeps returning to the theater to watch Song perform. David Cronenberg, working from David Henry Hwang's play, leaves Gallimard standing in the audience, watching Song and believing every word.
