Juana (Pilar López de Ayala) is the Queen of Castile, married to Felipe (Daniele Liotti), the Archduke of Austria known as the Handsome. She loves him past reason, and he does not keep faith with her. Vicente Aranda films the marriage as a long quarrel carried out in court rooms and bedchambers, with the emotion pitched high and the camera held close on Juana's face.
