In a scorched corner of near-future Australia, the highways belong to motorcycle gangs and the police are barely holding the line. Max Rockatansky (Mel Gibson), a highway patrol officer, cruises the empty roads until a gang led by the Toecutter (Hugh Keays-Byrne) targets him and his family. George Miller's debut strips away everything but asphalt and engines, leaving Max standing alone in his apartment, the walls closing in.
