Madame Bovary

(1991)Directed by Claude Chabrol143 min · PG-13Drama
“Two souls adrift on the waves of the Seine”

Emma Bovary (Isabelle Huppert), married to the plodding country doctor Charles (Jean-François Balmer), starts buying her way out of a provincial life she can no longer bear. Claude Chabrol adapts Flaubert's 1857 novel and follows her into affairs with men like Rodolphe Boulanger (Christophe Malavoy). Each new pleasure is paid for on credit, and the debts are being counted in nineteenth-century France.
