“At the sperm-bank she asked for a tall, intelligent, black man. One out of three ain't bad.”

Zora Mathews (Nia Long), a bright high school senior in Oakland, finds out that the father she never knew was a sperm donor, and that he is white. The man turns out to be Hal Jackson (Ted Danson), a loud local car dealer, which her mother Sarah (Whoopi Goldberg) has kept from her for years. Richard Benjamin shot it on location around Oakland, including Oakland Technical High School, and keeps the family scenes crowded and talky.
