Madeleine

(1950)Directed by David Lean115 minDrama, Crime, Mystery
“Here are the virile, violent facts that caused the most famous jury verdict in history...”

Madeleine Smith (Ann Todd) is a young woman from a wealthy Glasgow family, and her relatives cannot work out why she keeps putting off marriage to the respectable William Minnoch (Norman Wooland). None of them know about Émile L'Angelier (Ivan Desny), the Frenchman she has been seeing in secret for a long time. David Lean films this 1857 story as a period noir, with the Smith household and the courtroom kept in close, shadowed rooms.
