“This One is Truly Different!”

In a small French village, the schoolteacher known only as Mademoiselle (Jeanne Moreau) moves through her days as a respectable woman, while out of sight she starts setting fires and poisoning the animals. Tony Richardson, working from a script by Marguerite Duras and Jean Genet, gives her the villagers' trust and an Italian woodcutter, Manou (Ettore Manni). Her composure never slips, and everything she cannot let herself want turns into the crimes she commits.
