Daniel Madigan (Richard Widmark) is an NYPD detective who has just lost his gun to a fugitive named Barney Benesch, and he and his partner Rocco Bonaro (Harry Guardino) get one weekend to bring the man in. Don Siegel cuts between their legwork and Commissioner Russell (Henry Fonda), who spends the same days at functions and with grieving families. The two men barely cross paths, yet each one's decisions pull the other closer.
