“The guy with the dynamite heart meets the girl with the firecracker eyes!”

In 1947, Rip Smith (James Stewart) runs an opinion-polling business that is going broke. Then he learns that the small town of Grandview matches the entire country, answer for answer, and he moves in with his assistants to poll it cheaply and in secret. Wellman keeps the camera at street level and lets Jane Wyman, as the civic crusader Mary Peterman (Jane Wyman), move through the town like someone who lives there.
