Bob Merrick (Rock Hudson) is a reckless playboy whose speedboat crash puts him on the town's only resuscitator, the machine that Dr. Phillips, a local hero, needed when he died waiting for it. Merrick tries to make amends to the doctor's widow, Helen (Jane Wyman), and falls in love with her. Douglas Sirk fills the screen with the saturated color of a 1954 melodrama, Wyman and Hudson caught in it, the two of them tied together by a death neither can undo.
