Tracy Chambers (Diana Ross) works by day and studies fashion design at night, determined to leave the Chicago slums behind and become one of the top designers in the world. Her ambition carries her to Rome, where success starts to pull her away from Brian (Billy Dee Williams), the man she loves. Berry Gordy, the Motown founder, took over the direction mid-production, and he films it all in the spirit of a Motown record.
