Maîtresse

“She will open your eyes.”

Olivier (Gérard Depardieu), a young thief, breaks into what he takes for an empty house and wants only to get out with whatever he can carry. The owner catches him, and Ariane (Bulle Ogier) turns out to be a dominatrix who works from the rooms below. Barbet Schroeder shoots her trade and the pair's slow attraction in the same flat, grainy light, with no cutaways and no softening.
