Barkley (Victor Moore) and Lucy Cooper (Beulah Bondi) want one thing as they lose their house: to stay together. Their five grown children will not take in both parents, so Lucy goes to live with George (Thomas Mitchell) and his wife Anita (Fay Bainter), while Barkley is sent elsewhere. Leo McCarey watches two people who have shared a life for decades be split up, with little time left to them.
