“What keeps you together when you're worlds apart?”

In New York, Leo Vidales (Gael García Bernal) runs a successful business, and his wife Ellen (Michelle Williams) works long hours of her own, leaving their daughter Jackie mostly with Gloria (Marife Necesito), the nanny. When Leo flies to Thailand on a deal, a mammoth ivory pen he is given sets off a chain of events. Lukas Moodysson sets the lives of the rich and the poor side by side, and the film says plainly that what one family has, another family pays for.
