Sheriff Ben Sadler (Jeff Chandler) wants to know who killed a ranch hand in a modern cow town, even though everyone around him would rather he let it drop. The man most invested in the silence is Virgil Renchler (Orson Welles), the rancher whose henchmen did it and whose money runs the county. Jack Arnold gives Ben an unexpected ally in Skippy Renchler (Colleen Miller), the overprotected daughter of the man he is investigating.
