Miguel de Cervantes (Peter O'Toole) will do almost anything to keep one manuscript out of the fire. He and his manservant have been thrown into a Spanish Inquisition dungeon, where the other prisoners stage a mock trial to take his belongings. His defense is to act out the story of Don Quixote with those same prisoners, and Arthur Hiller films it as stage theater, the whole fantasy played out inside the stone walls.
