Detective Martin Beck (Carl-Gustaf Lindstedt) wants to find out who killed a police inspector in his hospital bed, and the answer keeps leading back to the dead man's own career. Reports of misconduct and the chance of revenge pull Beck, Lennart Kollberg (Sven Wollter) and Gunvald Larsson (Thomas Hellberg) deeper into the inspector's past. Bo Widerberg shoots the investigation in a rough, grainy 70s texture that keeps the dread close.
