Harry Bliss (Jack Nicholson) trains guard dogs for a living and is leaned on by a man who wants a manuscript stolen from one of his clients. The client is Joan Spruance (Ellen Barkin), an opera singer, and Bob Rafelson, reuniting with the writer of Five Easy Pieces, sends Harry into her life with a plan that cannot be explained to her. Harry is sleazy and likable, and Joan is not an easy person to lie to.
