Man with a Movie Camera
“The Greatest Documentary Ever Made”
A cameraman (Mikhail Kaufman) carries his camera through a Soviet city in 1929, filming people as they wake, work and go home again. Dziga Vertov cuts it all at speed, with no story and no title cards, and his wife Yelizaveta Svilova edits the footage. Behind the camera is a brother, in front of the screen a husband and wife, so the whole picture comes from one household.
