In the 1950s West, Dempsey Rae (Kirk Douglas) drifts from one cattle country to the next, a cowboy with no ranch and no plans to stay anywhere long. He lands in a range war between a hard-edged cattle boss, Reed Bowman (Jeanne Crain), and the ranchers who want her gone. King Vidor stages it in wide, sun-flattened country and keeps the camera at the distance of someone passing through.
