Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom

(2013)Directed by Justin Chadwick141 min · PG-13Drama, History
“It is an ideal for which I am prepared to die.”

Nelson Mandela (Idris Elba) grows up in a rural village and wants to practise law in Johannesburg, where he can stand up for people the state treats as less than citizens. Justin Chadwick follows the long road from that village to the presidency, with Winnie Madikizela (Naomie Harris) beside him through much of it. The book it comes from is Mandela's own, and the film ends on his inauguration as South Africa's first democratically elected president.
