“Liberation. Whether they want it or not.”

In 1933, Grace Margaret Mulligan (Bryce Dallas Howard) and her father (Willem Dafoe) come upon an Alabama plantation where the people still live as if slavery had never ended. Grace decides to stay and free them, and to see them through their first harvest with a lawyer and four of her father's colleagues. Von Trier stages it on a bare soundstage, the heavy gates of Manderlay chalked on the floor.
