Robert Dégrieux (Michel Auclair) is a Resistance fighter who pulls a young woman out of the hands of villagers certain she collaborated with the Germans. She is Manon Lescaut (Cécile Aubry), and the two end up stowaways on a ship out of liberated Marseille. Henri-Georges Clouzot, adapting Prévost's 1731 novel, has them tell the captain how far they went to survive, and Robert keeps choosing her.
