In 1964, Roger Willoughby (Rock Hudson) sells fishing gear for a sporting goods store and is known as the expert on the subject, though he has never cast a line in his life. Abigail Page (Paula Prentiss) badgers his boss into entering him in the big annual tournament, and Howard Hawks sets the two of them on a collision course. Roger stands in the shop, rod in hand, a man with a great reputation and no idea how to hold it.
