Why would the French Legion send a hardened major back to a remote outpost in French Morocco, just after the First World War? Major Foster (Gene Hackman) is ordered to guard an archaeological dig against El Krim (Ian Holm), a Rifian leader trying to unite the local tribes against the colonial government. Dick Richards fills the sun-bleached desert with dust and grain, and Foster rides out with a platoon of raw recruits.
