Maria Candelaria

Lorenzo Rafael (Pedro Armendáriz) wants to marry María Candelaria (Dolores del Río), a young Indian woman whom her village shuns because her mother was a prostitute. An old painter tells her story to a journalist who has asked about the nude portrait hanging in his study. Emilio Fernández frames the love as a fragile thing, with Lorenzo as her only protection against a community that has already decided what she is.
