Rocco (Matteo Simoni) grows up in Calabria in 1948 wanting to be somebody, to have a purpose beyond whatever his family's village has laid out for him. When his father Salvatore (Luigi Lo Cascio) leaves for the coal mines of Belgium, Rocco is sent for and becomes a migrant overnight. Stijn Coninx follows him into a new country and a new language, where Rocco looks for a way out through music and through Helena (Evelien Bosmans), against his father's wishes.
