Charlie Barber (Adam Driver) and Nicole Barber (Scarlett Johansson) are a theater director and actress untangling a marriage that once felt like a shared project. When Nicole moves to Los Angeles for film work, each hires a lawyer and they start learning what it costs to make each other an adversary. Baumbach finds the raw specificity in how two people who loved each other become strangers arguing over custody and money.
