Martha

“A bond marked by fear!”

Martha (Margit Carstensen) is a lonely librarian whose father has just died, and she has no one left to answer to. Then she meets Helmut (Karlheinz Böhm), who takes hold of her life with a husband's authority, and she begins to suspect he may want her dead. Fassbinder, working in the manner of Douglas Sirk, leaves Martha alone in a marriage that tightens around her, the two of them circling in the same rooms.
