“It's the love story of an unsung hero!”

Marty (Ernest Borgnine) is a 34-year-old butcher in the Bronx who lives with his mother and has stopped expecting anyone to marry him. His family and friends, including Angie (Joe Mantell), never let up about it, and he takes it with a tired, good-natured shrug. Then he meets Clara (Betsy Blair), a schoolteacher as plain and overlooked as he feels, and the people around him start telling him to leave her alone.
