Mary Reilly (Julia Roberts) takes a post as housemaid in the London home of Dr. Henry Jekyll (John Malkovich), where she scrubs the floors and carries messages while the household grows used to its master's odd hours. Soon a second man, Edward Hyde, begins coming and going, and the servants are told to treat him as one of their own. Stephen Frears keeps her close to the screen, a quiet girl drawn to two men she has no business wanting.
