In Varanasi, Devi Pathak (Richa Chadha) is caught up in a sexual encounter that ends in tragedy, and she cannot put down the guilt. Neeraj Ghaywan sets her story beside Deepak Chaudhary (Vicky Kaushal), a low-caste boy in love with a girl he is not supposed to have, and a father whose morals are wearing thin. Devi keeps going to work and keeps looking for a way out of the town that has already decided what she is.
