“They told 16 year old Rocky Dennis he could never be like everyone else. So he was determined to be better.”

Rocky Dennis (Eric Stoltz) just wants to go to a regular school and have a regular life, even though a rare disorder has swollen and reshaped his skull. His mother Rusty (Cher) runs with a motorcycle gang, and she backs him against everyone who stares, including the principal and her own wary family. Peter Bogdanovich builds the film on a plain question of who gets treated as ordinary, and why that should be so hard to give.
