“Would you reach out your hand to save a drowning man if you thought he might pull you in?”

A country is tearing itself apart in civil war, and everyone is waiting on one enormous charity concert. Uncle Sweetheart (John Goodman), the promoter running it, plans to pocket the money, so he gets the singer Jack Fate (Bob Dylan) out of prison early to headline. Larry Charles follows the journalist Tom Friend (Jeff Bridges), who is set on exposing the scheme before the show goes ahead.
