Maverick

“In their hands, a deck of cards was the only thing more dangerous than a gun.”

Bret Maverick (Mel Gibson) is a gambler who would sooner talk his way out of a fight than throw a punch, and he is still $3,000 short of the buy-in for a winner-takes-all poker game. He teams up with Annabelle Bransford (Jodie Foster), a fellow con artist with a thick Southern drawl, and Marshal Zane Cooper (James Garner) gets pulled in too. Richard Donner and a William Goldman script treat a good bluff as the best kind of honest living.
