“Champions can come from anywhere.”

Jim White (Kevin Costner) is a football coach who takes a job at a mostly Latino high school in McFarland, California, in 1987, after being let go from his last post. He notices how far the boys run each day, to school and to the fields where many of them pick crops, and he starts a cross country team. Niki Caro keeps the camera close to the families and the small town around them.
