Charlie Baileygates (Jim Carrey), a Rhode Island state trooper, has spent decades swallowing his rage and his desires until his mind finally snaps in two. Now Hank, his crueler, looser half, emerges without warning, and Charlie must escort Irene P. Waters (Renée Zellweger) across the state while the two sides of him war for control. By the end, Charlie sits alone in a car, both versions of himself grinning back from the rearview mirror.
