“Go to church on Sunday. Go to Hell on Monday.”

In New York's Little Italy in the early 1970s, Charlie Cappa (Harvey Keitel) is a small-time hood trying to work his way up in the mob while holding onto his faith and his girlfriend, Teresa Ronchelli (Amy Robinson). Martin Scorsese keeps him moving through bars, back rooms and the street. The trouble is Johnny Boy (Robert De Niro), his reckless friend, whom Charlie keeps vouching for, and cannot stop looking after.
