A New York cop named Jay (Will Smith) gets pulled into a secret agency that monitors aliens living undercover on Earth. His partner is Agent Kay (Tommy Lee Jones), a deadpan veteran who speaks in monosyllables and never smiles. When a series of murders points to an extraterrestrial threat, the two must track it down before it starts a galactic war. Sonnenfeld shoots the film with a glossy precision that makes the impossible feel inevitable.
