“This is the truth. This is what's real.”

Caine "Kaydee" Lawson (Tyrin Turner) is a young street hustler in Watts who wants out of the neighborhood and keeps getting pulled back by his friends, among them the volatile O-Dog (Larenz Tate). He is surrounded by temptation, and Ronnie (Jada Pinkett Smith) offers a real chance at leaving. The Hughes brothers, making their debut, film Los Angeles without softening it, letting the violence arrive as plainly as the conversations around it.
