“It's five miles wide... it's coming at 30,000 m.p.h... there's no place on Earth to hide!”

In 1979, a fragment of the asteroid Orpheus, nearly eight kilometers wide, is knocked loose by a comet and sent toward Earth. Paul Bradley (Sean Connery), a scientist, works with NASA and, in a stretch of Cold War distrust, with Tatiana Donskaya (Natalie Wood) of the USSR, since each side has an illegal nuclear satellite and neither can stop the rock alone. Ronald Neame keeps the cast crowded into command rooms and the clock running through all of it.
