“It's not a place, it's a state of mind.”

In the late 1970s, Chris (Christian Bale) lives a settled, middle-class life in suburban London with his wife Marion (Emily Watson). Then his old friend Toni (Lee Ross) turns up at the door, and Chris begins thinking back to his years in Paris in the 1960s. Philip Saville sets the two lives against each other, and Marion is the one standing between them while Chris makes up his mind.
