Why does a celebrated painter keep a young man in his house as assistant and model, and what happens when that arrangement is no longer enough for either of them? Claude Zoret (Benjamin Christensen) has grown old among his canvases, and Eugene Michael (Walter Slezak) is the one person who still stands inside his work. Dreyer brings in Princess Zamikoff (Nora Gregor), who admires Michael as much as Zoret does, and the old man begins to measure what he stands to lose.
