“Please don't tell anyone what Mildred Pierce did!”

In 1940s America, Mildred Pierce (Joan Crawford) divorces her husband and goes to work, first as a waitress and then as the owner of a restaurant that grows faster than she expected. Michael Curtiz frames her as a woman with no help, building a business for the sake of her daughter Veda (Ann Blyth). Whatever the restaurant earns goes to Veda, who always wants a little more.
