Stephen Neale (Ray Milland) walks out of an asylum into wartime England after two years inside, and the world outside seems no saner than the ward. On the road to London, he wanders into a charity fete and leaves with a cake that a ring of spies wants badly. Fritz Lang follows him as he tries to find someone to believe him, while the stranger's trust and the plain fear of being called mad both start to feel like the same trap.
