Miracle in Milan

(1951)Directed by Vittorio De Sica97 minComedy, Fantasy, Drama
“An impudent, riotous laugh on the lives and morals of our day!”

Totò (Francesco Golisano) grows up cheerful after an old woman, Lolotta (Emma Gramatica), finds him as a baby in her cabbage patch, and all he wants as a young man is work in post-war Milan. He ends up among the homeless, and they build a shanty town together on a vacant lot. Vittorio De Sica tells it as a neo-realist fable, in which kindness is the only thing the poor have to set against the men who want their land.
