David Stillwell (Gregory Peck), an accountant, wants to know who he is, because after a blackout in his office building he finds he can't remember the last two years of his life. A man he has never met has fallen from a window, and strangers seem to know him. Edward Dmytryk sends Stillwell through the case with a rookie private eye, Ted Caselle (Walter Matthau), and each clue he turns up makes the missing years harder to ignore.
