Miss Oyu
Oyu Kayukawa (Kinuyo Tanaka) is a widow with a young son, and custom says she must stay unmarried to raise him as head of her late husband's family. When Shinnosuke (Yūji Hori) is introduced to her younger sister Shizu (Nobuko Otowa) as a possible husband, he falls for Oyu instead. Kenji Mizoguchi adapts Tanizaki's novella in black and white, with a camera that watches the three of them from a respectful distance.
