“Ed Horman thought that being an American would guarantee his safety. His family believed that being Americans would guarantee them the truth. They were all wrong.”

In the days after the 1973 military coup in Chile, the American journalist Charles Horman (John Shea) vanishes, and no one in authority will say where he went. His father, Ed Horman (Jack Lemmon), a conservative businessman, flies in to look for him, joining his son's wife, Beth (Sissy Spacek). Costa-Gavras sets the two of them against each other's assumptions, a father who trusts the embassy and a wife who has stopped believing a word it says.
