Modern Romance

“Robert was madly in love with Mary. Mary was madly in love with him. Under the circumstances they did the only thing they could do... they broke up.”

Robert Cole (Albert Brooks), a film editor in Los Angeles, can't say why he just ended things with his girlfriend Mary Harvard (Kathryn Harrold), only that he was sure about it a minute ago. Albert Brooks, who also directed and co-wrote the script, follows him through the days after, when the certainty goes and the phone stays in reach. Robert wants her back, wants to be left alone, and can't tell which one is the real want.
